Episode 320: Straight Out Of The Textbook

January 27, 2017

The second half of the season is underway.  Now we’re on the road to the league title.  We’re also on the road to crowning the winner of the Turkish Cup, if that tickles the fancy.

Week 18 results of the Turkish Super League are reviewed.  Galatasaray seems to have some complaints about their loss to Karabukspor, but the pundits have a difference of opinion.  The relegation dogfight now gets interesting.  Antalyaspor continues their resurrection since week eight.  Besiktas won comfortably against Alanyaspor, at least on the surface.  One of the pundits however, thinks that there’s more to it than that.  Adanaspor’s current form might not be a fluke after all.  The week 19 schedule gets a rundown.

The Turkish Cup wrapped up its group stages.  Lukas Podolski made it a night to remember for himself against 24 Erzincanspor.  Bursaspor could count on one person to at least support them in their match against Umraniyespor.

News this week concerns moves and coaching changes.  Bursaspor and Gaziantepspor will be looking for new coaches.  The pundits discuss the possible replacements as well as the situations at the respective teams.  Hugo Rodallega is off to Trabzonspor, and will Trabzonspor finally have everything gel?  The podcast wraps up with a discussion of the death of Genclerbirligi chairman Ilhan Cavcav and his legacy.

Episode 319: The Mehmet Ekici Sweepstakes

January 20, 2017

The league is back in action, and we’re now at the halfway point.  Also there’s news about and moves all over the place.

Week 17 results of the Turkish Super League are reviewed.  Konyaspor had a bit of complaints against the referee, but Galatasaray got the three points.  Besiktas had no issues with Osmanlispor.  Fenerbahce unexpectedly lost points, although there might be referee complaints there too.  Antalyaspor continue their great run of form.  Istanbul Basaksehir won with some authority.  The week 18 schedule gets a rundown.

The Turkish Cup gets reviewed as matchday 5 in the group stages wrapped up.  It looks as though we’re going to have a derby in the next round.  Also, Galatasaray aren’t guaranteed qualification to the next round as of yet.  If they do make it, they might have to face a top team as well.

News this week concerns moves as the transfers keep coming.  Genclerbirligi have sold off one of their forwards to Bursaspor, and an interesting dilemma has come up because of it.  Kerim Frei has been sold off by Besiktas.  We have another coaching vacancy, and Alanyaspor were set to hire a former league title winning coach.  However, it seems that there might have been some snags.  Trabzonspor were about to sign a defender, but it looks as though that fell through.

The podcast concludes with the latest developments in the Mehmet Ekici transfer saga.

Episode 318: Why Is Tolga Zengin In This Movie?

January 13, 2017

The winter break is over, and it’s back to league action.  There have been a few moves that have been made since the transfer window is now open for the next few weeks.

Recent moves are the focus of discussion on this week’s episode.  Olcay Sahan is heading from Besiktas to Trabzonspor.  There’s a brief update on the Mehmet Ekici sweepstakes.  Galatasaray have made a couple of moves, and the main discussion here deals with the acquisition of defender Ahmet Calik from Genclerbirligi.  Muhammet Demir is back at Gaziantepspor, and the pundits discuss the loan move and what he will bring to Gaziantepspor in their fight to stay in the top flight.  Kayserispor had some trouble paying one of their players, and the pundits discuss this development.  Ersan Gulum is heading back the Besiktas, but it seems that there may be a factor that people may not have thought of concerning the move.

The week 17 schedule gets the rundown as the league resumes after the winter break.  Besiktas have a tough test in Ankara.  Galatasaray have to head to Konya, which isn’t the easiest place to play either.  Antalyaspor looks to continue their good run of form under manager Riza Calimbay.  An interesting matchup to kick off the weekend is featured in Bursa.  Some matches look to have clear favorites on paper, but there always some strange things going on in this sport.

The episode ends with a brief discussion on futsal in Turkey.

January 6, 2017

It’s a new year.  But just because there’s no football to be played doesn’t mean there isn’t football related issues to be discussed.

An article by Daily Sabah sports columnist Arda Alan Isik discussing the value of the Turkish Cup is discussed.  Isik argues that the Cup should be used as a youth cup competition.  The guys provide debate on this idea.

The recent moves are discussed.  Galatasaray decided to get rid of some dead weight.  Some Ukrainian players have decided to head to the Turkish league.  Besiktas have acquired a defender from the Croatian league, but is the price right?  Genclerbirligi have gotten a new central defender, which could signal what’s in store for Ahmet Calik.  Trabzonspor have gotten a couple of new fullbacks, but Omer Ali Sahiner hasn’t joined them officially.  The last point of debate this week deals with the transfer situation surround Mehmet Ekici and a potential move out of Trabzonspor.
