Episode 286: A Lighthouse Inferno

May 27, 2016

The season now officially wraps up, and it seems that it wasn’t a good week (or season for that matter) for Fenerbahce.  Now the lull before the Euro 2016 storm must be tolerated.

The international friendly between England and Turkey is reviewed.  Some history was made in this match for Turkey.  Fatih Terim decided to become his own video replay referee.  Considering the first goal, it might have been warranted.

The Turkish Cup final is reviewed next as Galatasaray won that.  Basically, Galatasaray achieves their goal for the season.

The PTT 1st division promotional playoffs kicked off.  There was some thrills at the end of the Elazigspor-Adana Demirspor match.  There weren’t many people though in Alanya.

The major talking point in news discussion this week is the Financial Fair Play settlements to both Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor.  For those who want to read the settlements, click this link.  For those who want to read the Besiktas settlement from last year, click this link.

Episode 285: The Konyaspor Kalamity

May 21, 2016

(Sorry this is late.  It’s the end of the season and since there are no competitive games to be played, someone who usually edits this decided to procrastinate a bit.  This was recorded on May 19th if you’re wondering.)

We’ve crowned a champion in the Turkish top flight.  We know who’s coming up and going down.  We also know who’s punched their ticket to Europe.  Although really, if a team has done well in the league, that would warrant a few national team call-ups, right?

The final two matchdays of this Turkish Super League season are reviewed.  Other than Besiktas clinching the league title, there were a few other things that stood out.  Eskisehirspor fans decided to engage in bonfires, although it was a bit premature.  The team however wouldn’t stay up though.  It was definitely not a good end to the season for Trabzonspor.  The last matchday had two blowouts, and we found out who got relegated as well.  There’s a brief debate as to whether Besiktas’ title count should be twelve (counting from the formation of the league from 1959 on forward) or fourteen (counting the two Federation Cup wins from 1957 and 1958).  Also, there’s a discussion on if the Federation Cup wins are counted, shouldn’t other competitive titles before 1959 be counted as well?  Also, there’s a brief summary of the gaps in the standings.

The PTT 1st division finished their regular season.  We know who’s in the promotional playoffs, and we also know who the second automatically promoted team is.  There’s heartbreak for one team in the second tier, and the playoffs get underway.  We go over the 1st leg of the promotional playoff semifinals.

The provisional roster for the Turkish national team was announced.  Some particular snubs stuck out like a sore thumb.  You could probably deduce that from the title of the week’s episode.  The glaring omission of any player from Konyaspor getting called up is the main topic of discussion here.

Episode 284: Run-Ins Are Completely Legal

May 13, 2016

It seems we might have a champion coming up this weekend.  At least we’ll know who also gets automatically promoted from the second tier though.

Week 32 results of the Turkish Super League are reviewed.  (Keep in mind that Konyaspor-Kasimpasa and Istanbul Basaksehir-Fenerbahce took place this past Monday, Ata didn’t mention it on the episode for some reason)  It seems that Besiktas are champions in waiting, although the goal scored this past week in the derby might be considered a bit sketch.  Of course, that is taking into mind the rule concerning the situation in question.  There was also a wild comeback in Ankara, a lifeline handed to Sivasspor (for now), and Trabzonspor going ballistic against Rizespor.  The schedule for weeks 33 & 34 are given a rundown.

Quick news bites are on tap this week.  The main talking point this week is Fernando Muslera’s availability for the Turkish Cup final later this month.  This is considering that the Copa America is scheduled to start in a few weeks.

The PTT 1st division overview wraps up this week’s episode, as they go into the final week of the regular season.  The race for the second automatic promotion spot goes down to the final day, as well as the relegation dogfight.  One particular decision from Adana Demirspor in terms of resting some players raised the ire of some at 1461 Trabzon.  The guys discuss Vural’s decision making.

Episode 283: Brain Farts Of Epic Proportions

May 6, 2016

The punishment for the fun in Trabzon came down.  One of the pundits didn’t like it.  That same pundit also had a brain fart as it pertains to clubs based in Izmir.  Actually there was a few brain farts in the football league last weekend.

Week 31 results of the Turkish Super League are reviewed.  Sivasspor might have their hopes of staying up dashed due to a goalkeeper blunder.  Eskisehirspor, on the other hand, might actually have a chance.  Two blunders in terms of penalty calls are also discussed.  The standings and schedule for week 32 gets the rundown.

The Turkish Cup semifinals wrapped up this past week.  The second legs of the respective ties are breezed through.  Featured in news this week are the sanctions handed out to Trabzonspor after all of the antics at Huseyin Avni Aker stadium back in week 30.

The overview of the PTT 1st division wraps up this week’s episode.  It’s going to be interesting for the last automatic promotional spot.  Also, the relegation race is going to get hot and heavy, escially with 1461 Trabzon and Denizlispor playing each other this coming matchweek.
