Episode 282: Adana Kebabs For Everybody

April 29, 2016

It seems that some people in Trabzon have way too much fun or way too much time on their hands.  It also seems as though the title race could get interesting.  Plus, we dream of someone serving us Adana kebabs.  Mmmmmmmmm...

Week 30 results of the Turkish Super League are reviewed.  It was a pretty high scoring weekend for the league.  Konyaspor looks totally set for Europe for next season.  Galatasaray get a monkey off their back.  Besiktas stumbles against Akhisar Belediyespor (and with the crowd at their advantage no less).  Kayserispor is looking good to stick around.  Gaziantepspor are still slipping.  The standings and schedule for week 31 gets the rundown.

The fun in Trabzon gets debated and discussed.  Fenerbahce were awarded the forfeit victory.  The guys get into all the shenangans and potential fallout in terms of sanctions.  News this week concerns fallout from Trabzonspor in terms of suspending players, Galatasaray losing their shirt sponsor, and Gaziantepspor sacking manager Mutlu Topcu.  Some Besiktas fans on social media are questioning the timing of this sacking as Gaziantepspor is set to face Fenerbahce this weekend.  The guys debate the sacking, as they have a differing opinion as to why Topcu was let go.

An old feature from many years ago on the podcast is resurrected for this episode.  With the Super League title race now tight, the guys discuss the final four matches for the title contenders.  Both Besiktas and Fenerbahce’s schedules are discussed and the guy debate who has it tougher or easier.

The overview of the PTT 1st division wraps up this week’s episode.  Adanaspor has officially clinched promotion to the top flight.  The race for the second promotional spot and the race for the promotional playoffs continue.  Another old feature of the podcast from long ago is resurrected, our “get to know” feature, as the guys describe Adanaspor.  Basically one of the pundits reads from Wikipedia.

Episode 281: Boo Birds Singing (But Is Anyone Listening?)

April 22, 2016

Still status quo for the league at the top of the standings, and there’s Turkish Cup as well.  Although we’d like to see one team in particular support their players.

Week 29 results of the Turkish Super League get reviewed.  Kayserispor seems to have breathed a sigh of relief in the relegation fight.  Galatasaray still leave a lot to be desired in the league, although they might have a point with one of Samuel Eto’o goals.  Fenerbahce may have won, but their fans booed their own team and the players.  Oh, and Landry N’Guemo of Akhisar Belediyespor scored a near blooper reel goal.  The schedule for week 29 gets the rundown.

In the second segment, the guys start off with the first legs of the Turkish Cup semifinals.  Both of the Istanbul big 3 clubs currently in the semifinals had comfortable wins.  For one host though, he was impressed with the support Konyaspor gave their team.  Of course, there is now the possibility that fifth place in the league standing could book a team with a ticket to Europe.  There have been arrests made as the effects of the 2011 match fixing scandal continue to resurface.  This time around though, it would be the investigator arrested for possibly framing Fenerbahce.  Some bad news from Sivasspor as Cicinho went down with an ACL tear, and there’s some discussion on Ruud Boffin of Eskisehirspor.

The guys wrap up the podcast with an overview of the PTT 1st division.  Adanaspor is close to promotion, so close that they can taste it.  The battle for the second automatic promotion spot looks to be hot and heavy though, as well as the playoff spots.  Also, the schedule for the promotional playoffs has been announced, and the dates of the games are revealed on this week’s episode.

Episode 280: Does Fikret See The Orman From The Trees?

April 15, 2016

It seems as though the league could be over from a title perspective.  Although the champions in waiting had their chairman butter up to the dear leader of Turkey a little too much; or rather, at least in the opinion of one of the pundits that is.  (By the way, orman in Turkish means forest for you non-Turkish speakers)

Week 28 results of the Turkish Super League get reviewed.  Fenerbahce seems to be slipping away from the title race. Besiktas opened their new stadium, although some might think that the results there might have been manipulated to achieve a certain result (we’re looking your way Ricky Faty).  Plus, the relegation dogfight looks a little bit tastier. The schedule for week 29 gets the rundown.

In the second segment, the guys start off with the Turkish Cup semifinals.  The first legs are set to kick off this coming week.  Then they take a look at the opening ceremonies for Vodafone Arena.  They concentrate mostly on who was there and how Besiktas could’ve handled the opening ceremonies differently.  For more details on the grand opening, we would recommend reading John Blasing’s Thisisfootballislife blog regarding the situation.  He goes into more detail, particularly as we had forgotten to mention the tear gas used against Besiktas fans before the Besiktas-Bursaspor match.  The other piece of news discussed is the actions of Caner Erkin before the Galatasaray-Fenerbahce derby this past Wednesday.  The guys go over the situation.  (Keep in mind this was recorded before his statement of apology was released as this podcast was recorded this past Thursday)  One other news note was the new date for the last round of league matches.

The guys wrap up the podcast with an overview of the PTT 1st division.  Adanaspor looks like they’re all but promoted at this point.  The race for second looks interesting.  The schedule for this weekend looks interesting as well.  Finally, Turkey’s national women’s team took on Germany in Euro 2017 qualifying.  One of the hosts actually got to see some of the match, and at least we can say Turkey didn’t get totally obliterated.

Episode 279: Is There A Turkish National Curling Team?

April 8, 2016

The league is back in action.  So it seems we’re going to get back into our groove as it should be a furious finish.

Week 27 results of the Turkish Super League are reviewed.  Konyaspor continues their run in 2016, although really it wasn’t easy.  The two leaders lost points, but we found out which club is Besiktas’ boogeyman team.  Galatasaray went down in Eskisehir, and Kayserispor still can’t score for some reason.  The guys run down the schedule for week 28.  This week featured a major clash between Konyaspor and Fenerbahce.  Plus, the derby will be made up.

The news discussion this week centers on a few bits of news outside of Istanbul for the most part.  There are a few schedule changes that happened after we recorded last week’s episode concerning Fenerbahce and Galatasaray before and after they make up the derby.  After losing to Konyaspor the previous week, it was reported that Genclerbirligi had sacked manager Ibrahim Uzulmez.  Everyone learned eventually it wasn’t the case.  The guys discuss the situation there.  Also, Emre Gural has left Eskisehirspor due to his wages not being paid.  There’s some “he said, she said” action concerning that situation as both player and club have differing stories as to the rectification of that situation.  The guys debate that situation.

The guys wrap up the podcast with an overview of the PTT 1st division.  Adanaspor looks to be prime shape for promotion.  The playoff spots (or at least the race for sixth) looks to be hotly contested.  Also, the Turkish women’s national team will take to the field this weekend for Euro 2017 qualifying.  Their opponent is Germany, and we hope they don’t get beaten up too badly.

Episode 278: List The Damn Drug

April 1, 2016

The international break seems to have messed us up.  It’s a brief episode this week.

The Austria-Turkey friendly is reviewed.  News this week concerns a failed drug test for Gokhan Gonul, two clubs having issues with paying wages, and Galatasaray having the injury bug bite.  The week 27 schedule for the Turkish Super League gets a rundown.  While the matches involving the top two will take precedence, there are some other matches people should watch out for that the pundits discuss.

There’s a brief rundown of the PTT 1st division fixtures for this coming weekend.  We conclude our coverage of the women’s league with the final week’s results.  Konak Belediyesi didn’t get their trophy on Trabzon Idman Ocagi’s turf for a unique reason.  Also, there’s some news about Besiktas’ women’s team in terms of their quest for promotion to the women’s top flight.
