Episode 273: Cübbeli Aykut Demir

February 26, 2016

One game this past weekend made headlines, and that is the main focus here.  Although for one of the pundits, the worst thing that came out of this weekend was the beard style of one particular Trabzonspor player.

Week 22 results of the Turkish Super League are reviewed.  The main focus of this discussion centers on the debacle known as the Galatasaray-Trabzonspor match (which overruns into the second segment).  The week 23 schedule discussion focuses on the upcoming Fenerbahce-Besiktas derby, which could determine the fate of the league championship.

The Europa League action gets reviewed.  One team will be moving on.  The other one... well, it didn’t work out so well.  The 2nd legs for both ties involving Fenerbahce and Galatasaray are briefly reviewed.

The podcast wraps up with our rundown of the PTT 1st division and the women’s 1st division.  The PTT league is still wild and woolly.  As for the women’s league, one of the usual suspects is starting to pull away after taking the lead last week.

Episode 272: We’re Sticking With The Action

February 19, 2016

We didn’t go into much news around the Turkish football world, but the action on the field more than makes up for the lack of newsworthy stuff.

Week 21 results of the Turkish Super League are reviewed.  Besiktas had to play two games this week, and it worked out okay.  Mersin Idman Yurdu made some history.  Genclerbirligi still has their hot streak.  Akhisar Belediyespor made their way up the table.  The week 22 schedule gets the rundown.

The Europa League action gets reviewed.  Fenerbahce had a good day against Lokomotiv Moscow (or at least Josef de Souza did).  Galatasaray still has work to do, but it might not be so impossible to get by as initially thought.

The podcast wraps up with our rundown of the PTT 1st division and the women’s 1st division.  The PTT league is still wild and wooly with the results there.  As for the women’s league, one of the usual suspects is back on top of the league.

Episode 271: Political Beef-Off Sessions

February 12, 2016

It was a pretty interesting week in Turkish football this past week.

Week 20 results of the Turkish Super League are reviewed.  Antalyaspor had an inspired performance.  Genclerbirligi continues their run of good form.  There were some calls this past week that had the pundits talking, and interestingly enough, none of them occurred in matches involving the big three.  Those calls get debated this week.

The first legs of the Turkish Cup quarterfinals were played this past week.  Of course, the match that was most anticipated was the Amedspor-Fenerbahce match (and not for any on-field reasons mind you).  There was a bit of solidarity for Amedspor shown from Fenerbahce in said match.  But also, there were other matches played.  It seems Besiktas might have an issue with their defense in the immediate future.

With the Europa League coming up, the upcoming ties get previewed.  For the Galatasaray-Lazio match, freelance journalist Scott Balaam joined the podcast to give information on Lazio.  As for the Fenerbahce-Lokomotiv Moscow match, politics will be rearing their head in this match as well.  The guys spend some time on that angle of this match.

News this week features a variety of subjects.  The injury bug hit hard this past week.  Two players in particular will be out for the season, leaving their respective teams in a pickle.  Also, Sivasspor will be looking to get back on track with a brand new coach.

This week’s episode concludes with a rundown of results from the PTT First division and Women’s First division.  The PTT league continues to exhibit parity.

Episode 270: Straight Outta Amed

February 5, 2016

We were originally supposed to get this out earlier than this.  But with the main news and politics creeping into the football world, as it seems to do in Turkey, we had to fit some stuff in.

The Turkish Cup starts us off this week. The results from the round of sixteen are quickly reviewed.  Reason for that is due to the story of Amedspor advancing and the political implications surrounding their advancement to the next round. Particular debate is emphasized on Amedspor player Deniz Naki and his post on Facebook calling for peace in the southeast.

News this week concerns mostly financials.  One Besiktas defender gets sold off to China (after long being rumored to do so).  There seems to be the possibility of government intervention in the finances of Turkish football.  Considering the insane amount of debt just between the big four, that might be a possibility.

We got schedule rundowns this week.  The PTT 1st division is first up (and we’ve got a request for any of our listeners out there).  Then we got the results for week 11 of the Women’s league, and a rundown of week 12’s schedule.  Finally, we have a rundown of this week’s Super League schedule.

Although that was to end the podcast, the sanction for Naki came down on Thursday.  The Turkish Football Federation seemed to come down either too hard or not enough (depending on where one stands).
