Episode 269: China’s Ordering Some Turkish Soccer Takeout

January 29, 2016

The east coast of the US is digging out of a snowstorm.  At least maybe they could get some matches played, unlike some places in Turkey. *cough* Trabzon *cough*

Week 19 results of the Turkish Super league are reviewed.  Fenerbahce had another controversial penalty call over the weekend.  Galatasaray sees their title chances now up to divine intervention.  Bursaspor continue their comeback ways.  Besiktas still haven’t started their second half of the season yet.  There was also a relegation six pointer in Sivas and the Ibrahim Uzulmez era at Genclerbirligi is off to a good start.  With no games this weekend, obviously there’s no rundown of the upcoming schedule.  However, the make-up dates for Besiktas’ two postponed matches were announced and we reveal that in this week’s episode.

The Turkish Cup group stages come to an end.  The matchups for the round of sixteen are set and the pundits review some of the matchups.  There was a thriller in Istanbul between Besiktas and Sivas Belediyespor with the TFF 2nd division side getting the win.  That match is briefly discussed.  (Although we should mention that historically on this podcast, the Turkish Cup reporting has never been one of much priority)

News this week sees a variety of acquisitions and sales.  Stephane M’Bia brings his adventure in Trabzon to an end as he is off to a Chinese Super League side.  The guys talk about potential interest from Chinese clubs to acquire Turkish players.  Muhammet Demir heads to Trabzonspor from Gaziantepspor, and the guys talk about that move (and didn’t mention it’s quite a good move financially for Trabzonspor as Demir will only be paid slightly over a million euros per year during the duration of the contract).

This week’s episode wraps up with a rundown of the results of the PTT 1st division and Turkish Women’s 1st division.  The guys review the standings for both leagues.  With the PTT 1st division also off this weekend, the guys give a rundown of the Women’s 1st division schedule for this coming weekend.

Episode 268: Karyamet

January 22, 2016

Here on Turkish Football Weekly, one of our pundits has invented a new word to describe a particular kind of snowstorm. Considering where he lives and what’s coming this weekend, it’s appropriate. It can also apply to Turkey and their dealings with snow at the moment.

Week 18 results of the Turkish Super league are reviewed. While one of the leaders in the standings didn’t get to play, the team trailing them happened to steal a win (according to many). Controversial penalty calls were the order of the weekend. While many were concentrating on the spot kick call in the Eskisehirspor-Fenerbahce match (and a controversial ejection to boot), there were three other penalty calls that got the pundits talking. There’s a brief review of the Turkish Cup group stages. Five matches have been played and the standings in each of the groups are reviewed.

News this week sees a variety of topics debated. Galatasaray have been referred to UEFA’s Club Financial Control Board adjucatory chamber and could potential get a ban from Europe for breaches of Financial Fair Play. Also, a couple of clubs have hired new managers this past week, and those appointments are discussed. Besiktas seems to have found a solution to their goalkeeping dilemma, and the new acquisition in goal is discussed.

This week’s episode wraps up with a rundown of the results of the PTT 1st division. The guys review the standings and go over the schedule for the matches coming up this coming weekend.

Here's the episode about Financial Fair Play referred to on the podcast: http://tfwpodcast.podbean.com/e/special-episode-alls-fair-play-in-love-finances/

Episode 267: We’re Doing It Live… Again.

January 14, 2016

Jeremy is back on the podcast after his European excursion.  He made his way to the DC area, so the pundits decide to record another “live” episode.  Same place again, but a bit of a different vibe.

Not much is spoken about in terms of the Turkish Cup.  Details about those results will be discussed next week.  (As of the recording of the episode, there was still games being played)

It’s basically a cavalcade of news this week.  The main discussion points are Molde right back Martin Linnes heading to Galatasaray, and the continuing dumpster fire known as Mersin Idman Yurdu.  Another head coach has come and gone in an instant over there.  Trabzonspor have decided to cut some wages, at least in terms of their top goalkeeper.  Plus, an old friend has returned to Bursaspor.

With the leagues resuming this weekend, the guys speak of the schedules of not only the Turkish Super League, but the PTT 1st division as well.  The guys also discuss the Turkish women’s top flight, as the first half of the season there concluded this past weekend.

(Note: there were a couple of instances of letting some cursing slip.  Hence, this episode is labelled as explicit.  Blame iTunes and their policies, not us.)

Episode 266: Nobody Knows What They’re Doing

January 8, 2016

Happy New Year to you all, we hope all is well.  We’ve got another loaded show for you this week. Kaan Bayazit returns for the third straight week, which means we’re going to torture your ears with the Turkish soccer talk.

The podcast starts off with the ongoing look into the Turkish Women’s 1st Division with the reporting of the week nine results.  There are a couple of games that weren’t played and the standings will be reported on for next week.  We also have an announcement for coverage of the PTT 1st division similar to what we have for the women’s top flight currently.

Genclerbirligi did it to us again, as they hire a new manager right after we recorded last week’s episode.  We talk about Ibrahim Uzulmez getting hired and some news about his previous club Elazigspor.

Galatasaray made some moves during this past week.  Ryan Donk arrives while Kevin Grosskreutz heads out.  The guys discuss the details of those moves.

Other news this week include the following: two players from Bursaspor not in future plans, Antalyaspor hiring a new coach and signing two players, and a tangent discussion about a very unique futsal tournament going on in Turkey featuring old players from the Istanbul big three.

After discussing how much of a dumpster fire Genclerbirligi was last week, this week we move on to discussion of possibly a bigger dumpster fire in Mersin Idman Yurdu.  They’ve already sacked manager Bulent Korkmaz, and his replacement didn’t last too long in the job either.  Are they screwed?  The discussion here ranges from the players recently released, to Bulent Korkmaz’s qualities as a manager (or lack thereof according to one pundit), to even whether the Super League as a whole is out of their depth.
