Episode 332: Blitzkriegs and Cord Cutting

April 29, 2017

The league was back in action.  The Turkish Cup kicked off the semifinal round.  However, it would be off the field issues that overshadowed play.  This is going to be a long episode so you have been warned.

Week 28 results of the Turkish Super League are reviewed.  Istanbul Basaskehir got a bit of a reality check in Rize, although their players would make news after the game was over.  Besiktas beat Adanaspor, but Adanaspor did put up a good fight.  The derby was bad; nothing more needs to be said.  Kayserispor have now made the relegation battle interesting.  The week 29 schedule gets the rundown, and this week features the potential league decider in Istanbul Basaksehir against Besiktas.

The fallout from the post-match activities from Istanbul Basaksehir is discussed.  The discussion would eventually take a turn towards TV ratings for beINSports Turkey and the amount of money they paid for Super League broadcast rights.  There’s even a discussion about cord cutting and if that could affect Turkish soccer viewing in the future.

The Turkish Cup semifinals kicked off this past week.  The first legs of the semifinals are reviewed.  Kasimpasa needed only a few minutes to beat Konyaspor.  As for the other match, Fenerbahce seems to have the advantage.

News this week is highlighted by a tragedy in Gaziantep.  Kayserispor will have to look for a new head coach.  But the main discussion this week concerns Gaziantepspor’s Frantisek Rajtoral committing suicide.  The pundits take a look at the situation and the social issues surrounding it.
