Episode 290: Crescent Stars and Stripes

June 23, 2016

Euro 2016 continues on.  Sadly though, it seemed Turkey got cooked.  Weird thing is there’s a lot of comparisons with Turkey and the United States considering both national teams are playing in summer tournaments.  Then again, your hosts are based in the United States, so... yeah, you can figure it out.

The first segment features an eyewitness account of all three Turkey matches in Euro 2016.  Ata’s friend Burak Sezgin joins the podcast to provide an on the ground summary of Turkey’s matches and what it was like being in the crowd during the games.  He also goes into the Arda Turan booing controversy during the Spain game, and it seems that the Turkish sports media may have blown the crowd reaction out of proportion.

Jeremy returns to the podcast after a brief absence for the rest of the episode.  In the second segment, the guys discuss Turkey’s matches against Spain and the Czech Republic.  As eluded in the first paragraph of this episode’s description, they do go into a tangent comparing Turkey national team coach Fatih Terim and United States national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann.  While the matches for Turkey are discussed, and debate who the blame should be placed on for Turkey’s overall performance.  They also go into a controversy concerning Terim and national team captain Arda Turan having a bust-up over money bonuses being paid to national team players.

The final segment of this week’s episode features a discussion of the news of the week.  Serdar Aziz is heading to Istanbul, and the transfer deal involving him heading to Galatasaray is discussed.  Also, Osmanlispor found out who they will be facing in the second qualifying round of the Europa League.  Believe it or not, the European club football season will kick off soon, and Osmanlispor, as of the recording of this podcast, is already in training camp to prepare for their future opponent.
